Water is essential for life. Approximately 50-60% of our body weight is water, and is the most important nutrient for the human body. Almost every pr
ocess in the body, including circulation, digestion, excretion and temperature regulation, involves water.
On average an adult body contains 35-45 litres of water, and we lose up to 3 litres per day through excretion, breathing and perspiration. How fast we lose water depends on a few factors like activity, environmental conditions. If water is depleted and not quickly restored dehydration will occur, and can result in death. On average we obtain about 1/3 to 1/2 of our water through food and the rest comes from drinking. The best food sources of water are fruits and vegetables.
Contrary to popular belief thirst is not a good sign in preventing dehydration. By the time you feel thirsty, you have already lost a substantial amount of water. It is critical to be well hydrated even before you begin exercising, as you can only absorb about 2-4 cups per hour while you exercise.
Some guidelines for staying properly hydrated:
-You should drink at least 8 cups of water per day.
-Drink 1 cup of water every 15-30 minutes during exercise.
-Drink chilled water rather than warm liquids.
